Hands-on on Science Holiday for visually impaired group in At-Bristol
On 10 March 2010 a group of visually impaired adults will be getting the chance to take part in live science experiments, including dissections, as part of their hands-on science holiday to Bristol.
The group, from Add-venture in Learning, will go on an educational exploration by dissecting pig’s hearts and organ systems to understand blood flow around the body.
The dissections are part of At-Bristol’s ‘Live Lab’ where live science experiments, which are traditionally associated with the classroom environment, are carried out by the general public.
In the afternoon they will be testing exhibits for At-Bristol’s new exhibition All About Us, due to open in February 2011. The group will get a sneak preview of new exhibits, including Sound Bite, an exhibit where the visitor bites down on a tube to hear music through the vibrations in their mouth. They will get the opportunity to provide feedback, to help develop the exhibits.
Gemma Kearsley-Woller, Learning officer for At-Bristol said ‘It’s great to be collaborating with a local project such as Add-venture in Learning, and using the resources we have here in At-Bristol for such a fun and interesting course. It has also given us the opportunity to pilot ‘Live Lab’ which will be part of All About Us, our interactive new exhibition about the human body opening in February 2011.’.
Add-venture in Learning have organised the group’s week long holiday, which will also features talks in Bristol University and other Bristol venues, focuses on hands-on science. Add-venture in Learning, which was set up following the closure of the University of Bristol’s Centre of Access and Communication studies, and runs educational courses for visually impaired adults.
