As part of the Pacesetter programme students and parents from Broadoak Community School took part in a four-week course run in collaboration with At-Bristol. The course included a visit to Explore At-Bristol as well as sessions held in the computer suite at Broadoak. The Broadoak group members were Cindy and Karen, Sara and Rachael, Tina and Michael and Margaret and Michael.

Session One
At-Bristol staff visited Broadoak to help the group plan their trip to At-Bristol. To get everyone thinking about what is needed when you go away for the day, all the parents were asked to think back to their earliest memory of a journey or day trip, and tell it as a story to their son or daughter. The pairs then worked together to write their stories up using word processing software. You can read their stories below.

The second half of the session was spent thinking about their trip to At-Bristol. The group searched the Internet for information, and spent some time looking at the At-Bristol web site. The whole group then set their minds to working out the timing of the day so that everyone would know where to be and when. Each pair made a family itinerary for the morning, and the whole group created a general itinerary to plan the rest of the day.

Session Two
By closely following their itineraries the group arrived at At-Bristol dead on time, only to be thrown immediately into a fresh challenge. Their mission was to create a photo story based on the four areas of explore. Using digital cameras, their imaginations and the Education Suite computers to add captions the groups produced the photo adventures you can see here.

Session Three
During their visit, each pair was asked to choose their favourite exhibit and think of words to describe it. Back at Broadoak, the groups used their words to make a crossword each using the computer programme Excel. Working together in their pairs, everyone had to fit the words into the crossword. To make it all a bit trickier, they had to think up some new words. The final stage was to write the clues. Have a go at their crosswords.

Session Four:

Ann Purnel, the Pacesetter tutor/co-ordinator for Broadoak Community School rounded the programme off during the final session. The pairs were asked to write a short report about their experiences on the course as if they were writing a review for a newspaper. You can read their reports below.
