The Department for Education and Skills (DfES) established the Weston Education Achievement Zone (WEAZ) in September 1998. The Zone’s vision is "the creation of a learning community, working together to offer people the opportunity to maximise and celebrate their achievements."

At the heart of WEAZ is a self-sustaining partnership of co-operating partner organisations, including schools, North Somerset LEA, and the business, voluntary and community sectors who are committed to collaborate working and shared learning with agreed targets and ambitions.

The 6 Key Goals of WEAZ and its partner organisations are:

Goal 1 – To raise achievement of children and young people in school at Key Stages 1 to 4
Goal 2
– To enhance the personal and professional competence of those supporting learning.
Goal 3
– To increase adult participation in education and training as learners.
Goal 4
– To raise accredited performance in the key skills.
Goal 5
– To raise the motivation and confidence of children and families.
Goal 6
– To increase the effectiveness of parenting support for learning

WEAZ was supported by the Adult Basic Skills Strategy Unity in the DfES to fund a series of "Pacesetter" courses, which aimed to enhance the literacy and numeracy skills of parents and to give them an opportunity to work with their children in innovative and exciting ways, using computers and ICT.

At-Bristol was funded by WEAZ to run a series of these Pacesetter courses with Broadoak Community School and Priory Community School in Weston-Super-Mare.
