At-Bristols school workshops support topics
covered in the Explore exhibitions and in the Planetarium shows. All are
linked closely to the National Curriculum and QCA schemes of work,
and have been developed in conjunction with teachers.
Unless otherwise stated, workshops are available Monday to Friday
during term time and are available for groups of between 12 and 35
students.

Fossil finders
Discover the magic of prehistoric worlds through playful and
imaginative games and activities in this hands-on workshop.
Students will make their own fossils, move like a dinosaur and
find out about the creatures that once roamed the Earth.
Max. 30 students and 15 accompanying adults per workshop.
Cost: £2.00 per pupil. Duration: 1 hour.

Jungle senses
See, hear, smell, touch and taste the rainforest in this hands-on
workshop. Students will create a rainforest rainstorm and find out
more about what grows and lives in a rainforest.
Max. 30 students and 15 accompanying adults per workshop.

Pushes and pulls
An exciting and interactive workshop investigating the forces
we experience every day. Students will learn about forces
through fun activities including making their own windmills
and launching rockets.
Cost: £2.00 per pupil. Duration: 1 hour.

Body basics
A hands-on workshop focusing on the body and the basic needs
for life. Students will test their senses, learn about the
skeleton, compare humans to other living things and see the
body from the inside out with Stuffee, the giant doll with
removable organs.

Changing materials
Hear dry ice 'scream', see rice crispies burnt with a blow torch
and explore the wierdness of slime in this fun workshop on
changing material states. Students experiment with making cheese
and launching effervescent rockets!

Earth, Sun and Moon
Students will discover how astronauts explore space, make
their own Moon dials and sample some real space food in this
fun-packed workshop. They will find out how the movements of
the Earth relate to night/day and the seasons from our Magic
Globe and 3D animations. Why not theme your day with a visit
to the planetarium?

Electricity and magnetism
Students will explore conductors, insulators, circuits and
magnets. They will power a clock with fruit and discover the
Earth's magnetic field by making their own compasses.

This workshop explores the forces of everyday life. Through

and gravity.

This lively workshop uses challenges and demonstrations, allowing
students to investigate the inner workings and structure of their
bodies, and the importance of diet and exercise in keeping it
healthy.

Students will explore the properties of light in this hands-on

Habitats
This interactive workshop gives students the chance to
investigate different habitats, including rainforest, savannah
and seashore. They will meet live animals and get some
hands-on experience with biological artefacts.

Graph attack!
Upper KS2 only
An exciting and hands-on workshop that uses games, challenges and
problem-solving activities to explore, interpret and draw
conclusions from graphs. Students will also use their own bodies
to make living graphs. The workshop covers key skills that
students require for their Key Stage 2 SATs.

changes.

DNA codebreakers
Students extract a sample of their own DNA, take part in games that
introduce the concept of genes and chromosomes and find out how the
DNA code is vital for all organisms. Classroom resources to support
this workshop are free to download from the Learning section of our

Light fantastic
Students will investigate the properties of light using a set of
purpose-built hands on exhibits. After this they will use primary and
secondary evidence to plan and produce their own presentation which
they will present to the rest of the class.

Solve it!
Students will get hands-on experience of a variety of forensic
techniques, including fingerprinting, chromatography and hair
analysis and then use these skills to solve a crime.

Meet the Gene Machine
This interactive dialogue workshop is designed to engage young people
in debate around the social and ethical implications raised by
advances in medical genetics. Through a combination of fast paced
humour and engaging debate, this one-hour workshop creates
opportunities for students to discuss these issues. The workshop has
two key elements, a short drama piece followed by a facilitated debate
session, all delivered by experienced members of the Explore learning
team. Sessions can be delivered to groups of up to 70 students at a
time. Meet the Gene Machine was devised by the Science Communication
Unit at the University of West of England.
Max: 70 students per workshop.
Cost: £3.00 per student. Duration: 1 hour.

in discussion about the social and ethical impact of issues around
fertility treatments.

DNA photocopying
Students isolate a piece of their own DNA using the Polymerase
Chain Reaction (PCR), then visualise it using gel electrophoresis.
The social and moral implications surrounding these genetic
technologies will also be discussed. Post visit class discussion
activities are available to download from the Learning section of
our website.
