UWE Foundation Studies Diploma in Art and Design Virtual Gallery

At the beginning of September students from the Foundation Studies in Art and Design course at the University of the West of England visited At-Bristol and the harbourside area as a venue for their first off-site drawing day.

The aim of the day was for students to gather visual information that could be used as source material for further work throughout the exploratory stage of the course.

Students were encouraged to view the site and their chosen subjects as an arrangement of shapes, lines, tones, spaces and surfaces, rather than looking to produce drawings of traditional ‘scenic’ views.

The students drew from both interior and exterior spaces and were particularly interested in the range of subject matter and visual imagery presented by the architecture, and the interiors of Wildwalk and Explore.

Associate Lecturer, Sam Thomson:

‘The breadth of imagery, texture and materials offered by the At-Bristol site gave students the opportunity to explore a variety of approaches to both ‘drawing’ and to information gathering’.

A selection of the artwork inspired by the visit to At-Bristol can be seen in the gallery below.
