This is Vein Viewer, or as we like to call it The Vein Ray!

You may have seen this as an advert, poster or on a billboard, but it’s showing a visitor using one of the new exhibits from All About Us!

How does it work?

It uses near infra-red light to tell the difference between your arteries and your veins. Red blood cells use a protein called haemoglobin to carry oxygen molecules around your body. Your skin, muscle and the haemoglobin in your arteries reflect this light. The machine detects where the light is reflected and absorbed and projects an image of your veins onto your skin.
